Howto radio stream

lato server

How to radio stream

how to make a DIY radio or better DIWO.

server side:

You need a machine (pc, server, VPS, etc) that relays the audio signal to the listeners. In other words, the audio signal is sent via the internet (eg mp3 music played on the PC) to a machine facing the network, which makes it available for listening to many in a stream form (ogg or mp3); this thing is called broadcast.

We use icecast2 on a server (VPS) with the free Debian operating system.

client side:

We use mixxx, free software that allows you to play and mix music, but also to record and send audio to the icecast server.

microphones and vocals:

To add the voice to the broadcast, one or more microphones must be connected to the local PC that runs mixxx.

It takes an external sound card to be connected via USB.

remote audio connection:

To add an audio connection from a distance, such as a phone call, you will need to attach a telephone patch which is in turn connected to an ATA with a VoIP connection to the external sound card, or use software such as jitsi.

If you also want to receive calls, perhaps from those who are not in front of the PC, you will need to have a telephone line, or a DID (phone number) also VoIP, and then bring the audio signal to mixxx via hardware (phone attached to the sound card) or software (jitsi).

Notes from a live radio

PC with GNU / Linux connected to the internet (cable or wifi or smartphone hotspot), we use the Mixxx software to run and mix a playlist of audio and music tracks, connected to the PC via Usb we have an external microphone (or a sound card with multiple microphones). Through Mixxx you can adjust the volumes, superimpose audio tracks, enable the microphones, Mixxx collects the audio signal from the microphone / i and finally sends the mixed audio to an Icecast2 server, Icecast2 receives the audio and takes care of the broadcast (make it available to tant *), providing a link, on port 8000, with the chosen name (mount-point) and the final ending of the chosen audio format (Mp3).

http://abbiamoundominio.org:8000/lottomarzo.mp3

During transmission, we add other audio files to the playlist (example) from Telegram, if Telegram-desktop runs on the same PC, just save the audio file and add it to the playlist, otherwise they can be moved from one PC to another using a pen Usb.

The mixed audio signal (transmission) is also recorded by the PC locally in Mp3 format (for archive or podcast).

FAQ

Better to use Mp3 or Ogg?

Today it is a freer format than Mp3, but not all smartphones are able to listen to a stream in Ogg format by default.

Why does the link contain: 8000?

Because the stream takes place on port number 8000, as the default web port (the 80) is already in use by the website. The choice of using 8000 or 72945 is free (just don’t use a door already occupied.) 8000 is easier to remember.

Am I obliged to use Mixxx?

Of course not, if you just have to transmit live audio (without jingles) you can use (example) Butt: http://danielnoethen.de/butt/

Can I do everything without using a server?

Ideally, yes, but you should have a very powerful PC, and to be reachable by listeners, you must have a public IP network address.

Can I do everything with a smartphone?

A smartphone is in fact (also) an audio recorder connected to the internet, there are apps that allow you to send the audio signal live to an Icecast2 server (example) Coolmic: https://coolmic.net/

Where can I find an Icecast2 server?

Icecast2 is free software, you can install it on your server or use one made available by a collective (example) Streampunk: https://streampunk.cc/ - Giss Tv: http://giss.tv/ - Unit hacklab: https://unit.abbiamoundominio.org

Why the domain-name is abbiamoundominio.org?

The name (of the internet domain) was chosen to represent a critique of the domain name domain system on the internet.

I made an audio (or video) transmission, where can I upload it to the network so that it can be listened to?

We currently recommend the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/
